Seit 2012 produziert der Handschuhexperte W+R aus Metzingen unter dem Markennamen KinetiXx® hochwertige Handschuhe für Wintersport und Freizeit. Neben einem großen Multisport und Ski Alpin Segment gilt vor allem der Langlaufbereich als das Steckenpferd. Hier haben Technologien, Design und die Qualität der Materialien eine Vielzahl an Profi-Athleten überzeugt. Doch was macht die Handschuhe für die Athleten so besonders? Warum ist die Weltspitze im Wintersport so begeistert und wie wird das Knowhow der Athleten für die Umsetzung im Consumer Bereich eingesetzt? Hier kommen die Antworten und ein ganz besonderer Einblick in die Entstehung eines maßgeschneiderten Athleten-Handschuhs:
Since 2012 the glove expert W+R from Metzingen has been manufacturing high-quality gloves for winter sports under the brand KinetiXx. In addition to a large multisport and alpine skiing segment, the cross-country skiing segment has proven to be highly successful. A large number of professional athletes have been convinced by the combination of KinetiXx’s technologies, design and high-quality materials. Big names in biathlon, such as Martin Fourcade and Quentin Fillon Maillet, the Norwegian team around the top athletes Johannes Thingnes & Tarjei Boe and Tiril Eckhoff, and in cross-country skiing the Russian top athletes Sergei Ustiugov and Alexander Bolshunov are wearing their specially manufactured gloves in the Winter Sports World Cup. But what makes the gloves so special for the athletes? Why are the world’s top winter sports athletes so enthusiastic and how is the athletes’ know-how used to implement it in the consumer sector? Here are the answers and a very special insight into the creation of an athlete’s handmade gloves:
Auf die persönliche Beziehung kommt es an
Die Reise startet mit einem Gespräch zusammen mit den Athleten. Meist besuchen sie hierfür die Firmenzentrale der W+R Gruppe, in der Handschuhentwicklung in Metzingen. Dort werden die Hände vermessen, die Materialien und Technologien ausgesucht und das Design besprochen. Es kann aber auch sein, dass das KinetiXx Team ins Trainingslager der Athleten fährt und dort die individuelle Vermessung und Beratung durchführt. So geschehen, als KinetiXx kurzfristig das norwegische Biathlon Team für die Saison 2019/20 ausrüstete.
A special relationship
The journey starts with a conversation between the athletes and the KinetiXx team. Usually they visit the headquarters of the W+R Group in Metzingen, where the glove development department is located.. There they get their hands measured, the materials and technologies are being selected and the design is discussed. Another possibility is an on-site visit, where the KinetiXx team carries out individual measurement and consultation directly at the athletes’ training camp. This is what happened when KinetiXx equipped the Norwegian biathlon team for the 2019/20 season at short notice.
Jeder Athlet hat andere Wünsche
Der erste Schritt ist dann die genaue Vermessung der Hände. Hierfür wird als erstes eine Kopie der Hand erstellt und anschließend jeder einzelne Finger und die Handflächen sowie der Handumfang genau mit dem Maßband vermessen. Dann erhält jeder Athlet eine eigene Box in der alle Informationen, Materialien und Schnitte aufbewahrt werden. Im nächsten Schritt geht es an die Zusammensetzung des Handschuhs und die Vorlieben der Athleten. So können sie aus einer Auswahl an unterschiedlichem Oberhandmaterial und einer geeigneten Innenhand wählen. Außerdem hat jeder Athlet einen anderen Wunschverschluss, der für ihn beim Rennen am besten schließt, ohne zu stören. Dabei sind alle Oberhandmaterialien aus speziellen und hochwertigen Stoffen, mit hoch atmungsaktiven Eigenschaften, die die Feuchtigkeit schnell nach außen transportieren und die Hände somit trocken und warm halten. Bei der Innenhand kommt es im Wesentlichen auf einen guten Grip an. Hier setzt KinetiXx auf eine stetige Weiterentwicklung und auf innovative Technologien. Wie zum Beispiel die Sharktec® Innenhand, die aus kleinen 3D Elementen besteht, die sich wie kleine Vulkane an den Stock heften und so für einen optimalen Grip und eine nachweislich höhere Kraftübertragung, als ohne Sharktec® Innenhand, sorgen. Des Weiteren gibt es noch Innenhände, die zum Beispiel sehr dünn aber dennoch mit Silikon beschichtet sind und somit einen guten Grip mit einer sehr hohen Taktilität kombinieren. Hier kommt es ganz auf die Vorlieben der Athleten an, welche Innenhand schlussendlich gewählt wird. Ebenso bevorzugen einige Athleten eine enge Stulpe, in die hineingeschlupft werden kann, andere wiederum einen Verschluss mit Zugband oder Klettverschluss, um den Handschuh nachträglich nochmals zusätzlich zu fixieren.
Every athlete has his special glove
The first step is the exact measurement of the hands. For this purpose, a copy of the hand is made and then each individual finger and the palms of the hands as well as the circumference of the hand is precisely measured. Then each athlete gets his own box in which all information, materials and cuts are stored. Next, the composition of the glove and the preferences of the athletes is being determined. They can choose from a selection of different backhand material and a suitable palm. In addition, each athlete desires a different closure, which closes best for him or her during the race without disturbing. At the same time, all backhand materials are made of special and high-quality fabrics with highly breathable properties that quickly transport moisture to the outside and thus keep the hands dry and warm. The most important thing for the palm is a good grip. KinetiXxrelieson continuous development and innovative technologies. Like the Sharktec® palm, for example, which consists of small 3D elements that attach themselves to the pole like small volcanoes and thus ensure optimum grip and a higher power transmission. Furthermore, there are other palms, which are for example very thin but still silicone-coated and thus combine a good grip with a very high tactility. It depends on the preferences of the athlete which palm is finally chosen. Some athletes also prefer a tight cuff that can be slipped into, while others prefer a closure with a drawstring or Velcro fastener to additionally secure the glove afterwards.
Kein Handschuh kommt vom Band
Aber nicht nur die Materialien können für die Athleten zusammengestellt werden, sondern auch ein individuelles Design. Dies wird gemeinsam mit den Vorschlägen der Athleten im Design-Team zusammengestellt und als Druckvorlage konzipiert. Durch die Kooperation mit einer Partner-Druckerei vor Ort können die Oberhände im Digitaldruck umgesetzt werden. Dann werden in der Entwicklungsabteilung die Schnitte erstellt. Diese geben die Vorlage für den Zuschnitt der Stoffe. Ein Team mit jahrelanger Erfahrung in der Handschuhentwicklung erstellt die Schnitte, schneidet die Materialien in Form und näht dann den Handschuh nach den Vorgaben der Athleten auf deren Abmessungen. Als Erstes werden dabei die Innenseiten der Finger, die sogenannten Schichteln an die Innenhand und dann an die Oberhand genäht. Dieser Teil verbindet die Oberhand mit der Innenhand und lässt so einen fertigen Handschuh entstehen.
Anschließend wird der Bund am Handgelenk angenäht und der entsprechende Verschluss am Handschuh angebracht. Erst wenn alle Teile vernäht sind, wird der Handschuh auf die richtige Seite gedreht und gebügelt. Hat der Handschuh kein spezielles Design können am Schluss noch die Logos auf die Oberhände geprintet werden. Dann ist der Handschuh bereit verpackt zu werden und zum Athleten zu gelangen. Eine erfahrene Näherin benötig dabei ca. 4-5 Stunden für ein Paar Handschuhe in Handarbeit, bei einer kompletten Neuentwicklung.
All gloves are custom made
Not only the materials can be arranged for the athletes, they also get their individual design. Following the athletes’ wishes and suggestions, the design team creates a print template. Through a cooperation with a local partner printing company, the hands can be digitally printed. Then the cuts are made in the development department. These provide the template for the cutting of the fabrics. A highly skilled and experienced team creates the cuts, brings the materials into shape and then sews the glove to the athletes’ measurements according to their specifications. The cuff is then sewn onto the wrist and the corresponding closure is attached to the glove. Only when all parts are sewn on, the glove is turned to the right side and ironed. If the glove has no special design, at the end of the process logos can be printed on the upper hand side. Then the glove is ready to be packed and sent to the athlete. Altogether, an experienced seamstress needs about 4-5 hours for a pair of gloves in manual work, for a completely new development.
Davon profitieren auch die Freizeitsportler
Erreichen die fertig entwickelten Handschuhe die Athleten, werden diese im Training ausführlich getestet und auf Herz und Nieren geprüft. Durch das persönliche Feedback der Athleten vor Ort an das KinetiXx Team können bei der weiteren Handschuherstellung Verbesserungen und Änderungen eingearbeitet werden. So entwickeln sich die Handschuhe Modell für Modell, Saison zu Saison, immer weiter. Auch entstehen so nach und nach neue Modelle, entsprechend dem Bedarf für eine optimale Performance auf der Loipe. Davon profitieren natürlich auch Freizeitsportler und Wintersportfans. Win-Win for professional and recreational athletes
When the fully developed gloves reach the athletes, they are extensively tested during the training. Through the athletes’ feedback, improvements and changes can be incorporated in future glove productions. Thus, the gloves are being perfected and developed model by model andseason by season. Thereby, new models are gradually being created in line with the demand for optimum performance on the cross-country ski trail. Of course, recreational athletes and winter sports fans also benefit from this.
