First World Championship gold for Norway
In the morning it still looked as if the first race, the 4 x 7.5 km mixed relay of the 52nd Biathlon World Championships 2021 in Pokljuka would have to be postponed or even cancelled due to weather conditions. The heavy snow drift on the Slovenian plateau in the Triglav National Park seemed to have no end. However, two hours before the start, the weather gods had a mercy and the snowfall increasingly reduced. Accordingly, the biathlon world federation, the IBU, was able to give the green light and start the first world championship race on time.
From the beginning, the Norwegian relay team consisting of Sturla Holm Laegreid, Johannes Thingnes Boe, Tiril Eckhoff and Marte Olsbu Røiseland was one of the big favorites for the title at the top of the field of 27 nations. This place could be defended by the athletes sovereignly and thus the first World Championships gold is in Norwegian hands. The big surprise on the first day of the World Championships was the silver medal of Austria, the team deservedly won against the Swedish relay team. France’s relay team with Quentin Fillon Maillet and Julia Simon crossed the finish line in fifth place, the DSV team finished seventh with a gap of 1:04.9 minutes. Alexander Loginov and Uliana Kaisheva with the Russian relay team finished disappointingly in ninth place. The hosts also weakened, although their local hero Jakov Fak gave a strong performance. The Slovenian team was only able to finish 16th.

THE SEASON HAS BEEN BETTER THAN EXPECTED FOR ME SO FAR, BUT TO BECOME WORLD CHAMPION IN MY VERY FIRST WM RACE AND TO WIN WM GOLD IS UNBELIEVABLE. THAT WAS A VERY GOOD START.

Erstes WM-Gold für Norwegen
Am Vormittag noch sah es so aus als müsste das erste Rennen, die 4 x 7,5 km Mixed-Staffel der 52. Biathlon Weltmeisterschaften 2021 in Pokljuka wetterbedingt verschoben oder sogar abgesagt werden. Das starke Schneetreiben auf der slowenischen Hochebene im Triglav Nationalpark schien kein Ende zu nehmen. Doch zwei Stunden vor dem Start hatte der Wettergott ein Einsehen und der Schneefall ließ zunehmend nach. Demnach konnte der Biathlon-Weltverband, die IBU, grünes Licht geben und das erste WM-Rennen pünktlich starten.
Von Beginn an setzte sich die norwegische Staffel in der Besetzung Sturla Holm Laegreid, Johannes Thingnes Boe, Tiril Eckhoff und Marte Olsbu Røiseland als einer der großen Favoriten auf den Titel an die Spitze des mit 27 Nationen besetzten Teilnehmerfeldes. Diesen Platz konnte durch die Athleten souverän verteidigt werden und somit ist das erste WM-Gold in norwegischen Händen. Die große Überraschung am ersten WM Tag war die Silbermedaille von Österreich, das Team konnte sich verdient gegen die schwedische Staffel durchsetzen. Die Staffel Frankreichs um Quentin Fillon Maillet und Julia Simon ging auf Platz fünf durchs Ziel, das DSV-Team wurde mit einem Rückstand von 1:04,9 Minuten siebter. Alexander Loginov und Uliana Kaisheva mit der russischen Staffel landeten enttäuschend auf Platz neun. Auch die Gastgeber schwächelten, obwohl ihr Lokalmatador Jakov Fak eine starke Vorstellung bot. Dem slowenischen Team reichte es schlussendlich nur zu Platz 16.

Die Saison verlief für mich bis jetzt besser als erwartet, nun aber hier gleich in meinem ersten WM-Rennen Weltmeister zu werden und WM-Gold zu holen ist unfassbar. Das war ein sehr guter Start.
Wir haben vor dem Rennen zu den Favoriten gezählt und haben dies auch mit WM-Gold bestätigt. Unsere Laufleistung heute war wieder einmal überragend, dies war auch unser Schlüssel zum Erfolg.
Gleich im ersten Renne hier zu gewinnen ist wunderbar. Wir wollten vor dem Rennen unbedingt eine Medaille, jetzt sind wir Weltmeister.
Gleich zum Auftakt der WM hier Gold zu holen lässt nun allen Druck von uns abfallen.
