On the first day of the Biathlon World Cup week in Ruhpolding the women had to start in the Chiemgau Arena for the 7.5 km sprint race. Here there was a Swedish victory by Elvira Oeberg, who could call off a strong performance. Oeberg had the fastest run time of the day and was able to keep the overall World Cup leader Marte Olsbu Røiseland at bay thanks to a faultless shooting. She also did not make any mistake at the shooting range. For Elvira Oeberg it was already the third individual victory in the current World Cup season. The Italian Dorothea Wierer made the jump to third place and thus for the first time this season on the podium. She rounded off her success with the fastest shooting time of the day. Justine Braisaz-Bouchet (FRA) finished fifth with one penalty loop and a gap of 40.0 seconds. Karoline Knotten from Norway finished twelfth ahead of her colleague Karoline Erdal in fifteenth place. Tiril Eckhoff, also from Norway, still managed a place in the top 20 with 19th place after her break due to illness. Best German with a gap of 1.17, 9 minutes was Franziska Hildebrand in seventeenth place.

That the successes in the new year would take their course surprised me a little. It was a good race from me today, especially with my running performance I was very satisfied. And if you can get through without making any mistakes, anything is possible. At the moment I'm just thinking from race to race.
Elvira Oeberg
I have nothing to criticize about my performance today, I was well on my way and shot without any mistakes. However, Elvira was not to be beaten today.
Marte Olsbu Røiseland
In terms of running, everything went well again today, only my mistake in the standing position annoys me, otherwise a place on the podium would certainly have been possible.
