In a race in which the favorites did not quite live up to their role, the winner was someone who had already been close to winning several times and had already won some relay races, but it had not yet been enough for the top. But today it was enough for the 29-year-old Frenchman Simon Desthieux. Often he was in the shadow of the great Martin Fourcade and then not least of Emilien Jacquelin and Quentin Fillon Maillet, but already at the World Championships in Pokljuka it crystallized with his silver medal in the sprint: Simon Desthieux can also make it to the top if he shoots flawlessly. And that was a must for a podium finish today, because with the 20 seconds penalty loop even the strongest runners like Johannes Thninges Boe or Johannes Dale had no chance for a podium finish. So all three front places went to biathletes who did not make any mistake. In second place Sebastian Samuelsson from Sweden secured a good starting position for tomorrow’s chaser with a flawless performance. The German biathletes also had good cheers. Arnd Peiffer was also able to confirm his outstanding shooting performance and secured bronze place. Benedikt Doll with one mistake in sixth place also contributed to a good German result. Only Johannes Kühn missed all targets in standing shooting and gave up. It was then discussed in detail whether a biathlete should then finish the race anyway. There was no podium for Norway in this sprint, the mistakes at the shooting range had too big an impact on the result and in deep snow it was impossible for even the best to make up for a penalty loop. So Sturla Holm Laegreid finished fourth with one miss, ahead of his compatriot Tarjei Boe. The favorite in the yellow jersey Johannes Thninges Boe made it only to eleventh place due to his shooting performance (three misses in total). Due to the fact that his competitors Laegreid, Dale and Ponsiluoma were not able to achieve a top result either, the strong Norwegian secured the small crystal globe for the sprint event early today. In addition, Frenchman Quentin Fillon Maillet made it to seventh place despite two mistakes.

In einem Rennen, indem die Favoriten ihrer Rolle nicht so ganz gerecht wurden, siegte einer der schon öfters kurz davor war und auch schon einige Staffelrennen gewinnen konnte, aber für ganz oben hatte es noch nicht gereicht. Aber heute, da hat es gereicht für den 29.-jährigen Franzosen Simon Desthieux. Oft stand er im Schatten vom großen Martin Fourcade und dann nicht zu letzt von Emilien Jacquelin und Quentin Fillon Maillet, doch schon bei den Weltmeisterschaften in Pokljuka kristallisierte es sich mit seiner Silber Medaille im Sprint heraus: Simon Desthieux kann es auch nach ganz oben schaffen, wenn er fehlerfrei schießt. Und das war heute ein Muss für einen Podestplatz, denn mit den 20 Sekunden Strafrunde hatten auch die Laufstärksten wie Johannes Thninges Boe oder Johannes Dale keine Chance mehr auf einen Podestplatz. So gingen alle drei vorderen Plätze an Biathleten, die sich keinen Fehler erlaubten. Auf Platz zwei sicherte sich Sebastian Samuelsson aus Schweden mit einer fehlerfreien Leistung eine gute Ausgangsposition für den morgigen Verfolger. Auch die deutschen Biathleten hatten gut jubeln. Auch Arnd Peiffer konnte seine herausragende Schießleistung bestätigen und sicherte sich damit den Bronze Rang. Auch Benedikt Doll mit einem Fehler auf Platz Sechs trug zu einem guten deutschen Ergebnis bei. Einzig Johannes Kühn ließ in Stehendschießen alle Scheiben stehen und gab auf. Darüber wurde dann ausführlich diskutiert, ob ein Biathlet dann das Rennen trotzdem beenden sollte. Für Norwegen gab es in diesem Sprint keinen Podestplatz zu holen, zu groß schlugen die Fehler am Schießstand aufs Ergebnis und bei einem tiefen Schnee konnten auch die Besten eine Strafrunde unmöglich wieder reinlaufen. So kam Sturla Holm Laegreid mit einem Fehler auf Platz Vier, vor seinem Landsmann Tarjei Boe. Der Favorit im gelben Trikot Johannes Thninges Boe schaffte es aufgrund seiner Schießleistung (insgesamt drei Fehler) nur auf Platz Elf. Dadurch, dass seine Konkurrenten Laegreid, Dale und Ponsiluoma auch keine Top-Platzierung erreichen konnten, sicherte sich der starke Norweger heute trotzdem schon vorzeitig die kleine Kristallkugel für die Sprint Teildisziplin. Außerdem schaffte es der Franzose Quentin Fillon Maillet trotz zweier Fehler noch auf Platz Sieben.
